This Sunday, September 17th, Camerata will be hosting Feges BBQ for a whole-hog extravaganza! This BBQ cookoff and wine party is our chance to say goodbye and thank you to one of the most talented ladies in the biz, Erin Smith.
After many years honing her skills in some of the best restaurants in Houston and across the U.S., Erin Smith realized her latest passion because of a lifelong love and passion for wine. Bringing with her an impressive resume as a chef and an innate ability to pair food with wine, Smith underwent intensive wine training to become a sommelier when she joined the Camerata team. Trading kitchen knives for wine corkscrews wasn’t easy, but Erin has done an amazing job. She’s leaving Camerata to open a BBQ restaurant of her own with her husband Patrick!
On Sunday from 4pm to 8pm, she and Patrick will be slinging platters of smoked hog with classic sides for $20. The lucky pig hails from Black Hill Ranch, right here in Houston’s backyard! Best of all, Sunday’s wine list will be filled with Erin’s hand-selected BBQ pairings!
On Sunday, September 24th, Camerata will be teaming up with Southern Smoke for a fundraiser to support members of the hospitality industry impacted by Hurricane Harvey. From noon to 8 pm, attendees will have the opportunity to taste through a bevy of premium wine generously donated by all parts of the beverage community. To accompany these bottles, food will be provided by local Houston restaurants.
This private event will also serve as the kickoff for Southern Smoke’s online auction. We have worked with wineries, importers and beverage professionals around the world to offer a wide range of items and experiences, including magnums of collectible bottles, private tastings and dinners, wine club memberships, exclusive travel experiences and more. You may begin bidding on these items on September 24, and the auction will be live until the Southern Smoke festival on October 22. Additional items collected by Southern Smoke will be added to the auction for the event on October 22, and the entire auction will close at 8 pm on October 22.

This Friday from 5-7pm Camerata will host Giusto Occhipinti for an afternoon dedicated to his Sicilian wines, which are bottled under the name COS. Giusto co-founded the winery in 1980 at a time when Sicily was best regarded for its bulk juice or full-bodied plonk. For almost forty years, Giusto has championed the wines of Sicily, emphasizing indigenous varieties like Nero d’Avola, Frappato, Grecanico and Insolia. He also adopted amphorae — large terra cotta jars — for aging his wines in the most traditional and natural way possible.
The region of Vittoria is located in the southeast of Sicily, where an African climate fully ripens the grapes, olives, and tomatoes that grow in equal numbers. A two-hour drive south of Mount Etna, the region of Vittoria is flatter and closer to the Mediterranean Sea.
We are excited to introduce all of you to Giusto. He will be at the bar from 5-7pm to discuss the importance of amphorae and cultivation of Sicilian’s indigenous varieties. We will be offering three of his wines by the glass on Friday. These wines will also be discounted for retail purchase. We look forward to seeing you later this week!
Camerata will team up with the classy gents of Manready Mercantile for a Candle-making and Wine-tasting Class! In case you haven’t had the chance to visit their shop on 19th Street in The Heights, Manready Mercantile was recently named one of the top 25 best new retail shops in the world by GQ. From their in-house candles & unisex apothecary goods to heritage menswear, Manready Mercantile specializes in handcrafted Americana.
Manready Mercantile founder Travis Weaver will walk you through each of the necessary steps to craft your own customized candle while our wine director Chris Poldoian leads you through a flight of skin-macerated white wines, also known colloquially as “Orange Wines.” As you work with Travis to create your own custom-candle using essential oils and soy wax, Chris will explain the viticultural techniques used in Eastern Europe and Italy to create these texturally complex wines. Tickets are limited, so come explore the aromatic world of candles and skin-fermented white wine!
Beaujolais Nouveau Day takes place on the third Thursday of November and celebrates the end of harvest and first wine of the season. The super gulpable “new” wines made from freshly-fermented Gamay are built for pure pleasure. For better or worse, the instant-gratification fruitiness of Beaujolais Nouveau has become a bit of a stereotype for all Gamay, and it has taken decades for the grape to shed this reputation and regain seriousness amongst the snobbiest of wine-drinkers.
But we’re not snobby. As such, we’ve decided to throw a tiki wine bash here at the bar. We know what you’re thinking… Camerata’s a wine bar with no (legal) access to rum and no extravagant tiki cups. But much like Beaujolais Nouveau itself, the idea of Camerata embracing Tiki culture is delightfully kitschy. We’re ready for some Gamay-soaked frivolity.
